Even after leaving Lake Middle School for high school, Alexix continued to spend time at the Mi Casa Neighborhood Center as a volunteer, taking on a leadership role in the afterschool program, mentoring younger students and assisting activity instructors.

After proving himself a reliable, creative and compassionate volunteer, Mi Casa hired Alexix as a youth employee.

Mi Casa’s Ladder of Leadership offers youth an opportunity to develop skills for work and life through incrementally increasing responsibility. For Alexix, leadership means being a role model for younger children and treating all people with kindness and respect.

Though many of the youth who come to programs at the Mi Casa Neighborhood Center participants remember Alexix as a peer, he has become a respected voice in the afterschool program. “Coming to Mi Casa has changed my attitude in a positive way and helped me develop more confidence.”
